Who is Bondi Vet's Dr Kate Adams?

Dr Kate Adams was thrust into the headlines on Tuesday after taking out an AVO against her banker boyfriend Greg Matwejev.

But there’s a lot more to the Bondi Vet: Coast to Coast star than her personal life, with Kate enjoying incredible success in her career long before she joined the Channel Nine series.

The 37-year-old has multiple jobs over the years, from a veterinarian to a data analyst and entrepreneur.

After completing a marketing degree and graduating in veterinary science in 2007, Kate spent four years working as a veterinarian before deciding to switch gears completely.

‘I looked at my life, extrapolated my future, and realised I would be in my forties and not able to afford a family or a house,’ she told Vet Practice magazine earlier this month.

‘I felt completely burnt out,’ she added. ‘I felt there was a lack of opportunity and professional development available. I was also working long hours and doing lots of on-call work.’

Kate went back to study again, earning a graduate certificate in public administration and completing half a master's in data analytics, leading her to work as an analyst for the intelligence community in Canberra.

She said she enjoyed the structure and benefits of a government job, and eventually worked her way up to become the chief of staff on the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

In 2014, she relocated to Sydney and moved into the private finance sector to work with a capital-raising firm.

‘It was all about raising money for early-stage start-ups and IPOs,’ she said. ‘It was fun, I learned a lot and made plenty of money.’

However, Kate’s passion for animals eventually returned, so she decided to resume her veterinary career.

She purchased the Bondi Veterinary Hospital in 2015, where the hit series starring Dr Chris Brown was set, and got back to work treating animals.

However, not content to settle on just a veterinary career, Kate decided to branch out in 2016 by founding her own hugely successful e-commerce business Thankly.

The service allows users to send handwritten notes and small gifts to people via the Thankly website.

As if that wasn’t enough, Kate also became a Non-Executive Director for Cannpal, a medical cannabis research company for companion animals.

Eventually the workload became too much, leading her to sell Thankly in August.

‘I had my vet clinic, the TV show and CannPal to focus on. I didn't want to spread myself too thin so I sold all my shares in Thankly,’ she explained.

Since early 2019, the 37-year-old has been focused on her role in Bondi Vet: Coast to Coast.

In January, she spoke out about gender inequality in the veterinary industry.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Dr Kate said: ‘Dr Chris [Brown] was so loved and charismatic and I think there will be potentially a little bit of flak in terms of me not being a man.’

‘There is still a perception men are better vets than females are and I still get people saying they only want a male to perform surgery on their animals. So I think 2019 is a perfect time for a new female Bondi Vet,’ she explained.

Kate made headlines on Tuesday after taking out a restraining order against her investment banker boyfriend after a late-night argument.

She said she was in fear for her life after trader Greg Matwejev allegedly screamed at her for four hours and dumped her belongings in the pool at their home.

‘I’m just trying to stay safe at the moment. I was really, really scared,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

The couple had just moved into their new rented home in Bellevue Hill, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, last Saturday night when the row kicked off.

Several neighbours intervened and called police, leading to Greg, 48, being banned from going anywhere near her.

Police last Sunday took out an interim apprehended violence order against Greg that was on Thursday extended by a Waverley Local Court magistrate.

He is banned from going near Dr Adams, her home, or the Bondi Vets practice on Old South Head Road, and must not stalk, intimidate, or harass her.

He did not contest the AVO and no criminal charges have been laid against him.

Kate and Greg met on the dating app Bumble in July and moved in together after five months of dating.
