‘It’s the worst thing that ever happened to the industry!’ Nikki Webster responds to backlash after it was announced she’s fronting the Australian version of Dance Moms

Former child star Nikki Webster is set to front the upcoming version of Dance Moms Australia.

And following the news last week, the 32-year-old has received backlash from members of a Sydney-based dance teachers group on Facebook.

According to The Daily Telegraph on Friday, one dance professional described the decision to film the show Down Under as ‘the worst thing’ to happen to the industry.

Speaking of the U.S. version of Dance Moms, the teacher said: ‘I feel we’re just starting to come out the back of it now that it’s past the height of its popularity in America.

‘And I wouldn’t want for the industry to get dumped back into the negative atmosphere it created,’ they added.

‘It gave the perception that kids had to be amazing from a young age at all costs and to be able to do six turns in a row with their leg pointed straight up against their ear.’

Speaking to the paper, Nikki said she did not want to dwell on negativity and believes the show is great for the Australian dance industry.

Nikki is known for her starring role in the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics and her hit single Strawberry Kisses.

JoJo Siwa – a breakout star of the American series – told photographers in Los Angeles on Wednesday that original coach Abby Lee Miller deserves to be fronting the show.

When asked whether the head dance teacher should be Nikki or Abby, the 16-year-old tween sensation responded without missing a beat: ‘Abby, Abby deserves it all.’

JoJo became a household name in the US after starring on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition – a talent show judged by Abby, 53.

She later went on to star in the original Dance Moms series, along with her mother.

Fans of Dance Moms may find it surreal to watch the Australian production without the larger-than-life personality.
